Title : Communication Possible after Samoan Tsunami & Indonesian Earthquake with BGAN Satellite Terminals from SkyNet Mobile Communications.
Issued : Thursday, November 22, 2009.

SKYNET MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS PROVIDES SATELLITE TERMINALS FOR SAMOAN TSUNAMI AND INDONESIAN EARTHQUAKE DISASTER RELIEF

Brisbane, Australia ; SkyNet Mobile Communications is responding to the Samoan tsunami and Indonesian earthquake tragedy with the supply of BGAN satellite terminals for the relief operation in support of the Australian Government’s contribution to the wider disaster relief effort.

Emergency Services personnel involved in the operation selected BGAN as part of a solution provided by SkyNet Mobile Communications. The solution has been deployed by the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service as part of a tsunami and earthquake disaster command center to ensure fast, global communications when traditional wireless communications are unavailable due to natural disasters.

In Samoa and Indonesia, BGAN from SkyNet is providing Queensland Fire and Rescue Service personnel with reliable, simultaneous voice and broadband data connectivity for email, Internet communications, video transmission and secure access into their headquarters network. By providing BGAN satellite data terminals relief operation personnel can be confident they have the equipment and skills that can provide practical relief to the people affected by the disaster.

SkyNet Mobile Communications had identified the QFRS’s requirements for such a disaster and recommended the solution. With the availability of high speed reliable satellite based communication networks, disasters of this type and magnitude, or regardless of the number or areas affected, can be seamlessly “brought back online” very quickly.

In this case BGAN was deployed simultaneously for both disasters, and across different regions, immediately re-establishing vital communication links both locally and internationally for the relief teams deployed to the disaster affected areas.

SkyNet Mobile Communications Managing Director, Jon Davis said, “In many emergencies , like that of the Samoan tsunami and Indonesian earthquake, first responders must rapidly deploy communications command centers to facilitate disaster-response and recovery initiatives.

By teaming with Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, we are privileged to deploy a BGAN mobile satellite solution that prepares them to establish and maintain communication links, even when local or cellular networks are outdated, insufficient or damaged.”

“SkyNet Mobile Communications remains fully engaged in planning with other government agencies and international partners to present an efficient and effective response to this disaster, and is ready to respond to any further Government direction”, said Jon.

Joint wireless home care solution

SkyNet Mobile Communications has joined with clinical software developer Procura to provide an integrated, wireless point-of-care solution for home care services. The two providers have developed a system that is able to automate time and attendance records for home visits by combining Procura’s software and SkyNet’s SatTrack application on GPS capable handsets.

The companies say their joint solution is able to boost productivity by streamlining business processes.
SatTrack is a mobile GPS-based solution for any support application that needs accurate location and job information at the click of a button.
The tracking system has been seamlessly integrated with Procura to provide an end to end clinical management system.

The system also allows home care workers to receive client information from a base office in real time, removing the need to carry bulky paper files
And if mobile staff encounter a threatening situation, SatTrack has a discreet duress alarm that provides GPS location details.

“Procura and its partners in North America currently deliver cell phone and telephony based point-of-care functionality to over 20,000 remote workers,” said the company’s president, Warren Brown. “Our partnership with SkyNet provides our Australian customers with a leading edge solution that allows them to decrease costs and attract and retain quality employees.”

A NEW ERA IN COMMUNICATIONS FOR AUSTRALIA

SkyNet Mobile Communications are proud to announce the beginning of a new era in communications for Australia, with the final link of Inmarsat’s Broadband Global Area Network service, BGAN, into the pacific region.

BGAN is the world’s first mobile communications service to provide both voice and broadband data simultaneously through a single, truly portable device on a global basis. It is also the first to offer guaranteed data rates on demand.
Managing Director of SkyNet , Jon Davis said, “In a standard office environment, broadband access is now taken for granted. But for those whose jobs take them away to more remote locations, accessing the corporate network or the internet often means a return to slow dial-up connections, or worse still, no access at all.”

“With SkyNet’s access to the BGAN service, you can set up a broadband mobile office in minutes wherever you are on the planet”, said Jon.
Delivered via the most advanced commercial communications satellites ever launched, BGAN provides affordable, mobile broadband services approaching speeds of 500 kBps in a highly compact, easy to use form.

Journalists, military personnel, aid workers and other established users of mobile satellite communications welcome the superior performance and lighter load of BGAN.  Like mobile telephone call caps, SkyNet as the industry leader, will be providing similar plans which will make this new communications technology both affordable and highly attractive to business and governments who require global telecommunications coverage, 24 hours a day.

But other users, such as engineers, consultants and project managers, anyone, in fact, who wants dependable, secure broadband and voice access when working in locations with unreliable or no telecom networks, can now reap the benefits of mobile satellite communications.

The launch of the BGAN service in Australia will compliment the complete range of satellite services provided by SkyNet , including the MultiTrack, Fleet Information System, and popular SatTrack and iView GPS applications.

Usually a stolen car is no laughing matter. But usually, criminals are a little smarter than this one.
Of all the vehicles lining Aerodrome Road in Maroochydore just before 10am yesterday, this hapless alleged car thief chose one with a GPS tracking device.

It wasn’t as if he wasn’t warned - the Toyota Hiace van he stole had the name of Brisbane security company Securecam emblazoned across it in big purple letters. While the alleged thief made what he thought was the perfect getaway, the van’s owners calmly logged on to the internet from their job site and tracked the signal from the vehicle’s iProtect system, passing information to the police.

They informed police when the van stopped for traffic on the Ballinger Road roundabout at Buderim and told them which parking bay it had stopped in at Buderim Marketplace about 10 minutes later.’That was where CIB detectives found both the van and the alleged car thief, moments after he pulled on the handbrake. “It was pretty bad luck to choose this car” Securecam operations manager Warwick George said with a chuckle.
When the guys came in and said the van was gone, I had a laugh, I thought they were having a dig, because, I mean, really - security is what we do. It’s our job.”

The iProtect unit can be attached to anything from ATM’s to vehicles and allows owners to log in and track their asset at any given time.If it is on the move, the tracking device lets you know which road, where it is turning and how long it has been mobile for. It’s the first time we have had to use it ourselves, but it has certainly proved its worth,” Mr George said. “Choosing to steal this car, well it probably wasn’t real bright.”

A 20-year-old man has been charged with the car theft and will appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court next month.
